SETI: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence – Board Game Review

Czech Games Edition (CGE) has a talent for creating games that capture our imaginations, and SETI: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence invites players to ask one of humanity’s greatest questions: “Who are we?” We invite you to explore “Is it lonely?” Designed by Tomáš Holek, the game sees players take on the role of scientists from various institutions, working to detect signals and discover extraterrestrial life. This is a game full of strategy, scientific excitement, and of course a little bit of tension.

Here’s my take on SETI and why it might be one of the most interesting additions to CGE’s lineup.

Game overview

In SETI, players manage resources and launch missions to scan distant stars, develop technology, and process data in hopes of making a monumental discovery of extraterrestrial life. As each player competes to collect the most “data points” (representing their contribution to the search), you’ll feel the challenge of balancing long-term strategy with the race to break through. There’s something deeply satisfying about the way this game draws you into this vast endeavor, while also reminding you of the very real challenges that come with such exploration.

The rotating solar system board adds an extra dimension of strategy and unpredictability, representing how space and technology shift and change. This is a novel design choice that keeps each gaming session feeling unique and dynamic, requiring you to carefully consider both your goals and your competitors with every move.

Components and presentation

CGE is known for quality and SETI is no exception. The rotating four-layer solar system board is a visually and mechanically striking piece. It adds an almost tangible sense of space and time as you work to adjust your mission to the changing position of the planet. In addition to the board, the game includes over 200 cards representing technology, scientific events, and unexpected discoveries you may encounter.

The quality of the components is top-notch, from the sturdy boards to the beautifully illustrated cards. Artwork is more than just decoration. It really builds a sense of reality and atmosphere. You can see CGE’s attention to detail here that makes the game both durable and immersive.

Gameplay mechanics

SETI combines engine building, resource management, and exploration, allowing players to actively participate. Resources are essential in this game. Resources are needed to launch the spacecraft, develop new instruments, and analyze the data. What makes the gameplay exciting is the rotating board. Planets move, telescopes readjust, and priorities change every turn.

One of the smartest aspects of SETI is its multipurpose card system. Each card has different uses and can be adapted to changing circumstances. This flexibility means that no two games play the same, allowing you to experiment with different strategies to see which combination of technology, resources, and timing works best, greatly increasing replayability. Masu.

The game has enough complexity to challenge even the most experienced gamers, but the rules are streamlined so you don’t get bogged down in micromanagement. That said, this is definitely a game for players who like to sit down with a cup of coffee (or two) and dig deep into strategy.

Is SETI a Eurogame?

For fans of Euro-style games, SETI: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence checks all the right boxes. True to Euro design principles, SETI emphasizes prudent resource management, strategic planning, and indirect competition. Here’s how it fits into this genre:

Focus on resource management and engine building: SETI challenges players to balance resources for launching probes, upgrading technology, and analyzing data. Every choice counts, and there’s a sense of satisfaction in building your abilities over time. This is a typical euro feature.

Strategy over luck: Although the rotating solar system board introduces a dynamic element, success at SETI relies on planning and strategic use of resources, not luck. Players looking for a game that rewards careful calculation over chance will find it here.

Non-Combat Competition: In typical Euro fashion, SETI is a competitive game without head-to-head competition. Instead, they engage in a “space race” to collect data points more effectively than their rivals, challenging each player’s strategic skills rather than relying on aggressive tactics.

Immersive themes combined with mechanics: Euro games often use themes to enhance the gameplay, not to drive it. SETI follows this approach, incorporating the science-driven feel of SETI projects, with an emphasis on strategic play. The theme draws you in, but it’s the mechanics that keep you hooked.

So, SETI can be classified as a Euro game with a unique sci-fi twist. Fans of Euro-style gameplay, especially those who enjoy titles with an exploratory or scientific theme, will find SETI an attractive and worthy addition to their collection.

CGE Legacy and Tomáš Holek Design

Czech Games Edition is no stranger to ambitious projects. They have made their mark on the industry with truly innovative games such as Codenames, Galaxy Trucker, Alchemists, and Pulsar 2849. Each of these titles has its own unique characteristics, and SETI is no exception. Based on scientific principles, the way it blends realism with fascinating mechanics feels like a natural fit into CGE’s catalog. Fans of past titles, especially science-themed titles like Pulsar 2849 and The Alchemist, will feel at home in SETI’s scientific and strategic depth.

SETI designer Tomáš Holek may be new to the field of board game design, but his understanding of science and passion for the subject matter shine through. This is more than just a space game. SETI feels like an invitation to think seriously about humanity’s role in the universe. Holek has clearly put thought and consideration into this game, and it’s exciting to see what he brings to future designs.

Similar games you may enjoy

If you’re interested in games that capture the spirit of exploration and discovery, here are some other games to check out.

Terraforming Mars: A Mars planet development and resource management game. High Frontier: A more powerful and realistic space exploration simulation that will appeal to science enthusiasts. Pulsar 2849 (also from CGE): If you’re into high-tech exploration and deep strategy, this is worth a look. The Search for Planet X: A deduction-based game that reflects the excitement of searching for something elusive in the depths of space. Beyond the Sun: For players who love technology tree development and space exploration.

conclusion

SETI: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is a thoughtful, strategic game that feels as grand as its theme. Challenging decisions and a truly immersive setting combine to bring the scientific thrill of searching for extraterrestrial life to the tabletop. CGE and Tomáš Holek have created something that is not only fun to play, but also captures the wonder and vastness of space exploration.

Whether you’re a fan of CGE’s other games, a science buff, or just looking for a new, thought-provoking game, SETI is for you. Be prepared to spend some time understanding the intricacies of the game. This is a game that rewards patience, careful planning, and a love of the unknown.
