Today, tabletop game publisher Ravensburger announced a Dungeons & Dragons-based expansion of its acclaimed Horrified tabletop game series at London Toy Fair. Scheduled for release this summer, the game will pit players against four iconic opponents from the world's most popular tabletop role-playing game. There are some additional mechanics inspired by D&D. Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons, the fifth game in the series, is a cooperative board game for 1-5 players ages 10 and up. The new RPG-inspired game shares the basic mechanics of the original line, with players working together to overcome puzzles, fight monsters, collect tokens, and protect citizens. Each of the four iconic monsters has its own thematic challenges to incorporate TTRPG's 51-year history into the design and story of this new game. Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons Monster Challenge was designed by Peter Lee, the idea behind the 10 Dungeons & Dragons board games and the Horrified: Universal Monsters game system. One familiar creature that fans of RPGs may recognize is the beholder from D&D. A monster that has been in the game since its release in 1974. Unlike many other creatures in RPGs, which are based on creatures taken from mythology and folklore, beholders are floating spheres. The body, with one large eye, mouth, and numerous protruding eyestalks, is a completely original piece of D&D. The image featured on the cover of D&D's first supplement, Greyhawk, made it famous as one of D&D's most iconic monsters. In addition to familiar monsters, Horrified: Dungeons and Dragons adds an element of tabletop gameplay to the mix. The board game will incorporate the iconic d20 (20-sided die), which has become synonymous with the game in popular culture. We were asked to create a Horrified game using D&D monsters. We knew what we had to do,” Mike Mulvihill, Ravensburger's game development manager, said in a statement to Polygon. “We are honored to be able to blend the historic and wonderful world and themes of Dungeons & Dragons with the immersive co-op play we have created at Horrorfied. I believe I created a game.'' The game will be released this summer and will cost $29.99.
