New and whimsical D&D 5E campaign setting
Obojima: Tales From the Tall Grass lands on D&D Beyond. This means you can now experience this incredibly engaging, Ghibli and Zelda-inspired setting, integrated into the rest of the digital toolkit.
Kickstarter Smash Hit
obojima: It's not an exaggeration to say that Tales from the Tall Grass made waves. When the 1985 game launched Kickstarter, they probably wanted a solid vote, but what they got was one of the biggest D&D kickstarters with over $2.6 million backing from over 26,000 supporters.
After all, many of us were hungry for a world that fused touches of old-fashioned fantasy and nostalgia with the touch of life's charm.
The physical book hasn't bumped into the shelf, so I've already brought it to fold, so the coastal wizard seems hungry to make this part of the 3P library.
How much does it cost?
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass on Beyond Beyond Now is available for $29.99. This is the same as the digital PDFs sold at the official store. So if you've already invested in D&D and you're using a toolset for Maps VTT or Character Builder, this could be a good option.
Why I love bojima
I've always wanted to brew potions, make friends with spirits, discover the ominous rot spreading across the land, or play a D&D campaign where you can grab some good ramen on your way to a mysterious shrine.
There is something special about a world that is not just about inviting adventures. It invites you to slowly put in everything. The Skilling Officer is not about epic wars or the catastrophe that ends the world. It is about the joy of discovery, the magic woven into everyday life, and the simple joy of a well-cooked meal after a long journey. This is the best leisure fantasy, an environment that takes place on the centre of exploration and wonder, rather than combat or conflict.
If you're like me and grew up watching my neighbor Totoro, and if you're playing The Legend of Zelda, Obojima will feel like home. Even now, I'm aware that I'm playing Stardew Valley and Valheim in high octane games, so I love the way this setting captures the nostalgic charm and slow pace of these chiller games.
We also had the opportunity to sit down with Jeremiah Croftton, one of Obojima's lead designers, and talk more about their world.
Jeremiah and co-designers Ali Levich and Adam Lee have a video podcast with plenty of advice on buildings around the world, so I highly recommend checking out that if you're interested in setting up.
Get ready to create a strange and amazing character
This setting is not just in the world. It's also packed with fresh ways to create characters that really belong to it. Here's what you're getting:
Three new ancestors – Dara is a mysterious being born from the roots of a sacred tree, inheriting knowledge from the mystical glyphs left behind by its predecessor. Bad, they wander around bojima, document their discoveries and unlock the mystery of their origins. Nakdamas are people with a tiny frog-like spirit, embracing the joys of life with endless enthusiasm, thriving in the hub of society and weaving elaborate stories of their adventures. 11 Subclasses – Even the Origami-wielding wizard, the masked bard, the belly brewer wild buffer who blends magic potions in his stomach, or the sheep dragon monk k (designed by the community!), Obojima naturally has a subclass that makes him feel like he belongs to this world. Four new factions join adventurous youth scouting groups in line with the witch's contract, becoming part of a diver league looking for ancient artifacts or taking on the academic life of explorer researchers. Two new skills – mechanics help you break things and fix them. Meanwhile, rescues allow you to clean useful materials from the world around you. 20 Famous achievements – Training specialized sword fighting techniques, gain abilities tied to your ancestors, or gain unique perks based on your chosen faction. 48 Magic Items – From bikes except for the Flame Trail to keyers that guide mysterious energy, bojima's magic is just as stylish as powerful. 50 New Spells – Use impacts to power ancient machines, evoke weapons from vegetables, create elaborate structures of sand, and create magical train stops to assist in your trip. 60 monsters and NPCs – Spirit companions, legendary creatures, corrupt fear – there are plenty of new faces (friends, etc.) to meet your journey. Potions, potions, potions! – Obojima has installed a robust potion brewing system with over 130 ingredients and 180 potions, ranging from combat-ready elixirs to fun and quirky brewing that can be seamlessly integrated into any campaign.
