The role of large-scale language models and image generators in the TTRPG community has been a touchy topic since widely accessible models have become increasingly available over the past few years. Fans generally want to keep those usages from being adopted as much as possible. Possible. But despite all the controversy it has faced, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons, the world’s biggest RPG, believes that sooner or later AI will show up in the Forgotten Realms and beyond. “We already use AI internally in development, mostly machine learning-based AI or proprietary AI rather than the ChatGPT approach. ,” Hasbro…
The CEO of Hasbro said that all of his peers use AI for their Dungeons & Dragons games, which is apparently a “clear signal that we need to embrace AI.”
Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, has had a very public and very awkward relationship lately over the use of AI in their marketing materials and sourcebooks. Whenever the use of AI occurs, the resulting outrage causes enough of a stir to trigger a full retraction and apology. But that doesn’t stop Chris Cocks, CEO of Hasbro (WoTC’s parent company), from being very excited about the use of AI in D&D. At a Goldman Sachs conference (via Futurism), Cox casually mentioned that “We’re already using AI in the development department,” before…
After a series of AI scandals at gaming company Wizards of the Coast, the CEO of parent company Hasbro made a shocking revelation. Speaking at a Goldman Sachs conference, Hasbro CEO Chris Cox admitted that the entertainment conglomerate not only plans to build bespoke AI systems in the future, but has already started using AI in the development of games like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. “We’re already using AI in the development space,” Cox said when asked at the financial company’s annual technology conference, Communacopia, about the potential for AI to lower production costs. “This is primarily…

Carlos Leon was depressed. His relationships were failing and his career seemed directionless. What he craved was an escape, an escape inspired by the fantasy worlds that he had been obsessed with as a child and continued to obsess with as an adult. Think worlds inspired by The Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons: fantastical spaces filled with magic, wild creatures, and above all, adventure stories. With no real dragons to slay, Leon began attacking his metaphorical demons by disappearing into these imaginary worlds. He finally found solace in converting his apartment bedroom into a medieval bar for…
In a press release about the casting, Day, Iyengar, and Ishii had this to say about their roles: “I’ve loved Dungeons & Dragons and theater my whole life,” Day said. “I can’t wait to combine the two and be a part of this amazing production.” “The fun of tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons comes from the surprise and joy of improvisation,” Iyengar said. “Twenty-Sided Tavern is a huge step forward in how collaborative storytelling can create amazing and unique experiences, and I can’t wait to share it with this audience.” “I’ve had the incredible fortune of being a part…
71047 Dungeons & Dragons offers official LEGO versions of classic Dungeons & Dragons characters, but tabletop gamers have been building their own customs for years. Let’s compare… LEGO and Dungeons & Dragons are natural bedfellows, so it’s no wonder that there’s an entire community dedicated to making the two worlds collide. The legodnd subreddit has been around for a long time, before the LEGO Group came up with the concept of official sets, and avid tabletop role-playing enthusiasts have been creating their own LEGO Dungeons & Dragons minifigures for years. And while some of those customs are truly impressive, given…
A new free rules update from D&D Beyond will bring some changes to the 5.5E Player’s Handbook.
Yesterday, D&D Beyond released a free rules update. The update appears to have a small number of meaningful corrections to the new rules. I’m not sure if you should call this an errata or a stealth update, but yesterday, D&D Beyond released a “basic introduction” for D&D’s new 5.5E rules set. This isn’t the full SRD 5.2 that’s due to be released next year (more on that in a moment), but it’s more of a comprehensive starter rules set. It’s like the 5E basic rules found in the D&D Beyond Compendium. This is a great way to try out the…
