Thunderfolk receives BG3's Co-op DND Experience along a new path, and it's out now

Certainly, if you're talking about officially licensed video games set in dungeons and dragon universes, Gate 3 of Baldur is in its own class. Even if you remove DND from the equation, it's one of the best cooperative games ever made. But while its vast range and seemingly infinite possibilities are what values it, it can be a barrier for some. Sunderfolk, which is about to create a cooperative experience that is much closer to DND game night, delivering in a new way using each player's smartphone is one of the most interesting new projects of the year. Now, waiting to play it is finally over. To avoid the initial confusion, considering that we've just mentioned smartphones, no, this is not a mobile game. Sunderfolk – The team within Dreamhaven, the company of Ex-Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime, developed by Secret Door, is a turn-based RPG for PC and consoles. However, mobile phones replace the need for multiple gamepads or mouse and keyboard input. It's your controller. That's your inventory. It's your card's hand. It's even your DND-esque rulebook. Start the game on the system, connect it to a shared TV or monitor, everyone just downloads the free app and scans the QR code on the screen, and they're all connected to the same game. There is no need to purchase the games individually. You only need one copy. Fans of party games may have had similar experiences to things like Jackbox, but implementing this into a rather complex cooperative is a real novelty. And I don't mean anything gimmick either. So, it's an intrusive infrastructure – what's actually down in the Thunderfork? Well, it's all about reconstructing and protecting Arden, a quaint fantasy village, beneath a bright stone that gives it a mysterious and life-giving experience. Unfortunately, this Brightstone is corrupt, which means unnecessary attention to the citizens of Arden. There are six classes that match the traditional archetypes found in fantasy RPGs, such as Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger or Rogue. Everything is drawn by animal characters. As a team, you will be stuck on missions that include turn-based encounters. When it's your turn, you not only choose an action, but also choose a card that can enhance its effect, add useful modifiers, and work against you by weakening the attack or applying debuffs (if luck isn't on your side). Complete missions and keep Arden safe for another day, and retire to a village where you can interact with locals, get upgrades and rebuild this little heaven. There are some great turn-based RPGs, and some very promising RPGs to arrive in the coming months, but nothing more innovative when it comes to deliveries than Thunderfolk, focusing on couch co-ops. Now you and your companions can get stuck. Not only PS5, Xbox Series X | S, and Nintendo Switch, but Sunderfolk is also on Steam for PC players.
