D&D: Need a little inspiration? Steal from these games

Stuck planning your next D&D game? Inspiration can come from anywhere. Especially these games. Inspiration is important in D&D. Not just the type that inspires me. But actually, this gives me a kind of inspiration for thinking. It's like a fire ignites in my chest as I sit thinking about what fresh hell this week has in store. Or what will the next character be? That inspiration can come from anywhere. anytime. So if you're stuck, it helps to find out where you can get it. We encourage you to steal like a thief from your favorite books, movies, and games. Today I'm going to show you some of the best games to steal from D&D. Fire Emblem: Three Houses Fire Emblem games are great for stealing D&D inspiration in general. It's full of fantasy battles and human relationships drama set against the backdrop of war and intrigue. But there are some elements that make Three Houses particularly suitable. One is the very classic plotline of an evil secret society of sorcerers pulling the strings in the shadows. It's delicious. But there are also relationships that can be developed between characters. Perhaps you could steal the idea of relationship arcs and come up with little scenes that show your favorite NPCs getting closer to the PCs or each other. Vampire Survivors Leveling up feels great. And in Vampire Survivors, the game is basically all about how fast and how well you can level up. However, such a chaotic wave-clearing game may be difficult to adapt into a D&D game. You'll be surprised. Perhaps capture gels for various weapons. VS has a lot of interlocking systems that allow you to convert benefits granted by items to auras and powers that monsters may have. One of the best ways to keep D&D combat fresh is to experiment with new ideas. Hollow Knight Hollow Knight is a great game. It's also great to steal from D&D, as it has a deep dark fantasy vibe. This is a great example of what dungeon crawling feels like. Especially since you can help NPCs in town, rescue new residents from the depths, and discover more about what happened. Like other Metroidvanias, this is a great template for mega dungeons. Stardew Valley Stardew Valley is an incredibly deep sim full of digital crops ready for harvest. Also great for collecting items for your D&D game. For example, a town is the perfect template for how deep an adventurer can get to know anything. Not every D&D game requires a trek across continents. You can stay in one area and dig deep. But what I'm saying is, steal the farming system. Let's ask a wizard to make magic cheese. It doesn't get any better than that. What does Pentiment, a game about illuminating manuscripts and solving 16th century murders, have to do with D&D? Not much. Petiment is great for stealing. No one would have seen it coming. But if you've ever had trouble coming up with “what do NPCs say to each other,” Pentiment is full of all kinds of examples. What games have you mined for D&D Ideas? A staff writer and DM at Bell of Lost Souls, JR covers all kinds of RPGs and occasionally eats a sandwich. You can ask him about both (email protected) Read Comments (0)
